Chartered environmental recognition for five water professionals

The five recipients of the qualification are Guernsey Office of Utility Regulation head of regulatory policy Jeanne Golay; Northern Ireland Water education manager Jane Jackson (pictured); Northumbrian Water asset data cleansing validator James Mitchell; Northumbrian Water senior engineer Stuart Tilley and DWI inspector Jacky Atkinson.

In order to attain CEnv status, practitioners must fulfil a spectrum of criteria and demonstrate competence in areas such as leadership in sustainable management and the ability to adopt an environmental perspective when evaluating and analysing problems.

The title Chartered Environmentalist is awarded by the Society for the Environment, through licensed bodies such as the IoW. The Institute’s chief executive Lynn Cooper said: “CEnv denotes sound knowledge, proven experience and a profound commitment to sustainable best practice.

“It is the Chartered Environmentalists, working in many sectors of business, regulation, academia and national agencies who will take a leading role in managing environmental assets and who will play such an important part in the goal of a sustainable world. It is important that the water industry embraces this qualification, so the Institute is very proud to have registered these five members.”

One of the recent recipients Jane Jackson, who has a degree in Environmental Science and joined Northern Ireland Water in 2007 as environmental education manager, explained why achieving the CEnv was important to her:

“Chartership is recognition that I am a competent professional and a member of the respected body of Chartered Environmentalists. It gives colleagues an indication of the level of my knowledge in sustainability and environmental issues. It adds kudos to my position in a small department in a field which is mainly technical and scientific. I am delighted to have achieved this recognition.”
