New SBWWI chair puts sustainability at top of agenda

Saint Gobain PAM UK business development director David Smoker has been elected as the new chairman of the Society of British Water and Wastewater Industries (SBWWI).

Mr Smoker is stepping up from the vice chair role to take the reins from outgoing chairman, UK Drainage Network WaSC development and operational director Martyn Hopkinson. And, he has made it clear he is keen to drive innovation in the water company supply chain

Speaking at the SBWWI agm, where his position was made official, Mr Smoker said: “I am keen to increase the rate of take-up of supply chain innovation by water companies, particularly in the area of sustainability.

“To achieve this, the SBWWI will continue to work with water companies, through both formal and informal meetings, to broaden co-operation on these issues. In addition, we will strengthen our existing links with organisations with overlapping interests to develop common positions on issues affecting the water and wastewater industry.
