Over the past year, UBM has been working with outsourcing firm MITIE to increase its office recycling rates from 85% to 95% by adopting greater source-segregation throughout its premises.

According to MITIE’s general manager for waste, Jason Loughlin, not only have recycling rates increased for the company, but cost savings have been made as well. He said: “In order to get a good system in place, we needed to examine the different waste streams and create greater transparency through the reporting process.”

He said that site layout was crucial in implementing a better system, as well as the type of bin used, where it was positioned, and clear signage. UBM’s on-site loading bay for its waste was also reconfigured for greater efficiency.

“Getting staff on-board is really important so we held an awareness day for them, and the cleaners as well, to educate them on the day of the new recycling scheme’s launch,” Loughlin added.

UBM is now looking to build on its results by targeting waste reduction, particularly for its catering areas, and will be working with its suppliers to encourage better recycling and recovery methods.
