CHINA: Domestic production of wind turbines on the horizon

Two years of research by the Xinjiang Wind Energy Company has led to the successful domestic manufacture of 600kW wind power generators. Thus far, China has had to import such units.

The Xinjiang Wind Energy Company is located in one of two regions deemed a “rich wind energy area” by China Energy Watch. A band of wind runs from northern Inner Mongolia to eastern Xinjiang, located in China’s northwest.

According to Chinese newspaper reports, the Ministry of Science and Technology has inspected the company’s 600kW units and has deemed them equal in quality to imports.

In 1993, wind power generation had a total capacity in China of only 17MW, with small-scale generators for household usage the norm. By the end of 1997, 19 wind power fields had been established with a total capacity of 166.5MW.

Several European countries, including Denmark, and the US have exported wind power products to China. Now, the Chinese government wants domestic production to take over.
