Under the agreement, Viridor will manage general recyclables including batteries and e-waste in a bid to drive recycling rates up to 75%.

NHS Lanarkshire’s head of sustainability & environment Marie Porteous said the partnership would result in initial savings of £40,000 with more expected through improved waste management processes.

She said: “The contract aims to reduce the amount of waste disposed of across Lanarkshire, while increasing the quantity of waste recycled. It will also reduce the overall carbon footprint of the process by looking at vehicle routes, bin sizes and uplifts.”

Viridor will utilise a mix of recycling technologies located at its Bargeddie materials recycling facility (MRF) to process the waste, and intends to invest a further £2.5m in treatment capacity.

Viridor’s NHS Lanarkshire account manager Chris Sloey said: “Not only is this green procurement in action, it represents real and substantial cost savings to the health board – money which can be re-invested in frontline staff and patient care.”
