Businesses wasting £400m on bad boiler practice

UK businesses could make savings totalling more than £400m per year, simply by improving the efficiency of their boilers, according to new research from the Carbon Trust.

The new guidance, published this morning (February 29), found that heating and hot water accounts for more than a third of energy consumption in UK organisations, and up to 60% of carbon emissions from hot-water intensive industries, such as food manufacturing and laundering.

However, a few simple energy-saving measures could reduce heating costs by up to 30%, 10% of which can be saved immediately and at low cost with measures such as installing insulation.

The two guides published this morning, ‘Steam and high temperature hot water boilers’ and ‘Low temperature hot water boilers’ are part of the Carbon Trust’s Expert in Energy series.

Top tips contained in the guides include advice about boiler maintenance, minimising heat loss and effective water treatment.

The Carbon Trust is running a free webinar about how to maximise hot water boiler efficiency, and therefore savings, On March 7.
