The Waste Industry Safety & Health Forum for Northern Ireland (WISH NI) will bring together key stakeholders from across the industry to and promote activities to improve working practices.
Spearheaded by the Health & Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), the platform will include representatives from the British Metals Recycling Association, Container Handling Equipment Manufacturers, Energy and Utility Skills, and district councils.
The forum was officially launched by the NI health minister Edwin Poots who said safety was paramount.
“The management of waste does carry risks and I welcome the establishment of the WISH NI forum as a means to improve risk management and protect all those working in the sector.”
CIWM’s chief executive Steve Lee added: “The waste industry is committed to managing and mitigating the risks associated with the collection, transport and treatment of waste.
“There has been a substantial reduction in the number of incidents in recent years … we aim to build on this and the forum will support the whole sector in driving up performance even further.”
