The Students’ Green Fund, provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), aims to help students engage with their universities and colleges on sustainable development.

According to the HEFCE, the fund will encourage local collaborative sustainability initiatives through students’ unions, “putting students in the driving seat for sustainability engagement initiatives, as well as supporting them in their role as agents for change.”

The NUS will run a single-round bidding competition in the summer of 2013, to allocate the funding to be implemented over two full academic years (2013-14 and 2014-15).

HEFCE deputy chief executive Steve Egan said the student-led initiative had “the full support of the sector” and would “play an important role in helping meet challenging carbon targets and wider sustainable development goals.”

The four key themes of the Students’ Green fund will be participation, partnership, impact and legacy. It aims to engage everyone from students to governors and course representatives. Another key priority for the fund will be strategic partnerships that encourage community learning and development in the area of sustainability.
