Initiatives that helped the train company achieve the standard include an LED installation project, a target to send zero waste to landfill and the implementation of Energy Management system ISO 50001.

It is also adding electric car charging points at stations managed by Virgin Trains: Runcorn, Stafford and Warrington Bank Quay.

Virgin Trains safety and environment director Peter Bowes said the certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to improving its environmental performance.

Bowes added that this progress is being achieved through energy saving, waste reduction, ethical procurement and sustainable actions.

ISO 14001 specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organisation to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal requirements about significant environmental aspects.

It applies to those environmental aspects that an organisation identifies as those which it can control and those which it can influence.
