According to a news report on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning (5 March), science correspondent Tom Feilden said that Figueres has flown into London for one day to address business leaders on the topic of climate change.

Feilden said that Figueres will tell the business community to push “the politicians in the right direction”.

He added: “She is hoping to seize the moment. She will argue that the wild weather we’ve been experiencing here in the UK, and also in Australia where they have been suffering from droughts and the US where they’ve had exceptionally cold weather, is sort of a wake-up call – a sign of things to come if we do not act on global warming.”

Feilden said that she will urge the business community to take the lead on the issue of climate change and lobby Government to reduce carbon emissions. She will also call on business leaders to reduce their own carbon footprint and invest in renewable technologies.

Feilden also explained that he thinks Figueres is already “pushing at an open door” because she believes that many business leaders “are actually ahead of politicians in terms of accepting the need for change”. However, he also said that she thinks there is a need for a level playing field so that “everyone moves together” on the issue.
