DECC asks energy sector for advice on boosting innovation

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has launched a public consultation in a bid to ensure that regulation in the energy sector is encouraging innovation.

The consultation opened on 15 January and will run for four weeks. Stakeholders are being asked to share their views on three specific questions: –

1) How can legislation help support new technologies and business models?

2) How is new technology likely to shape the energy sector?

3) How can regulators better utilise new technologies to generate efficiency savings and reduce burdens on business?

The launch of this consultation comes just days after Amber Rudd promised to “light the fire” of energy innovation in 2016 by ramping up investment in research, development and demonstration (RD&D).

The consultation focuses on the activities of DECC and the Oil and Gas Authority, with other energy sector regulators undertaking parallel engagement exercises.

Commenting on the consultation, Energy and Climate Minister Lord Nick Bourne said: “Innovation has the power to transform the energy sector and the way we live every day.

“We are committed to cutting red tape and creating industry environments that foster new ideas and give technologies a commercial edge.

“Collaboration is key and I look forward to hearing the ideas from industry so we can ensure an innovative energy sector that works for hardworking families and businesses.”

In its plan to improve the UK’s productivity, announced last July, the Government required all departments to publish an ‘Innovation Plan’ by spring 2016.
