Wyvern selects Liebherr loader as prime handler

Wyvern's landfill site at Poole in Somerset was once a clay quarry and, having been worked out, was converted to a landfill site and started taking domestic waste in 1970. Since that time, it has received some 100,000 tonnes a year from the Wellington and Taunton catchment areas. Now the landfill operation has come to the end of its life and the area is to be restored and landscaped, meaning that household waste which cannot be recycled will now have to be taken to other landfill sites. To deal with this, Wyvern has built a waste transfer station adjacent to the landfill site which, annually, will handle around 50,000 tonnes of local waste before it is transported to other landfill sites in the county.

Wyvern has chosen a Liebherr L554 2plus2 wheeled loading shovel as its prime materials handling machine. This powerful loader has been equipped with high lift arms and quickhitch-mounted 5 m3 capacity Ulrich high tip bucket. The 5.4 metre clearance of this bucket easily loads into the 4.5 metre high bulk trailers and with reach to spare. The pin height of the high lift arm allows the operator to compact material inside the trailer during the loading process. For handling green waste also deposited at the transfer station, the L 554 2plus2 was also supplied with a quickhitch mounted Ulrich 4 m3 capacity clamp bucket.

Liebherr engineers worked closely with Wyvern to ensure that the customer’s materials handling and operational safety requirements were met for this waste transfer application. Equipment and systems specified included Bridgestone VSDL L5 tyres, Kidde automatic fire suppression system, Groeneveld automatic greasing system and Prolec weighload system with print out facility.

The machine’s safety items – all supplied by Spillard Safety Systems – included reverse camera, a “this vehicle is reversing” vocal alarm, and red/green indicator lights to signal to truck drivers when it is safe to approach the transfer station.

The L 554 2plus2 is one of a range of i4 wheeled loading shovels from Liebherr. With a tipping weight of 12.27 tonnes, an operating weight of 17.30 tonnes and an engine capacity of 145kW (198HP), this model provides power and performance to spare and a site-proven fuel economy.
