“The UK has set itself challenging targets to reduce emissions under the Climate Change Act and the government will be hoping to make inroads on this goal as quickly as possible.

“It should be borne in mind that emission reductions are difficult to measure in practice and, as such, it will be difficult to retain a clear picture of the real trend in reductions over the medium to long term.

“It does appear encouraging that emissions from houses have reduced as buildings are a major contributor to the emissions totals in the UK. However, people might be worried about the increase in transport emissions given current concerns over rising vehicle use and aviation.

“There still remains a lot to be done in achieving the statutory targets. This will entail a range of domestic measures, including the Carbon Reduction Commitment, the full details of which are still to be announced.

“Ensuring substantive support for renewable energy and clean technology initiatives will also be fundamental to making progress.”
