THAILAND: Park Rangers given right to open fire on poachers

A National Park Ranger's death on 17 November has prompted Government action. In future, rangers will be allowed to shoot when they encounter armed poachers.

Illegal poachers operating in Khao Yai National Park target sandlewood trees and wildlife. The trees are sold to the approximately 30 perfume factories around the park.

The Agriculture Department intends to declare sandlewood a reserved plant and the Industry Ministry will be asked to ban the perfume factories operating on the park’s boundaries.
