Webinar - LCM2007 - The latest UK land cover map derived from satellite data

The UK countryside is under pressure!
A growing population of over 61 million people needs space to live, to work, space for leisure and recreation, places to bury or process waste, a transport network and raw materials for infra- structure.
Mechanised agriculture, the use of pesticides and herbicides, driven by increasing demands for food and the economies of scale have squeezed wildlife into marginal and fragmented habitats. The services that these ecosystems provide such as clean water and insects to pollinate our crops are therefore under pressure too.
The requirements of and the demands that we place on our terrestrial environment are often conflicting and need to be managed and balanced to maintain and enhance our quality of life. But how? Before we can begin to answer this question we need to take stock.
We need to know what we have on our land and where it is.
LCM2007 is the latest land cover map, produced by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. It has derived from satellite images and digital cartography and gives land cover information for the entire UK. Land cover is given as UK Biodiversity Action Plan Broad Habitats. Broad Habitats are the framework through which the UK Government is committed to meet its obligations for monitoring in the wider countryside.
LCM2007 is available in different formats to suit the various needs of users. The polygon product is the most detailed. Its spatial structure has been derived from national cartography: OS MasterMap for Great Britain and OSNI Large-Scale Vector for Northern Ireland.
Each polygon represents a parcel of land and has attributes describing land cover and meta data describing about how this information was derived. Five raster products simplify this information. A 25x25m raster gives the most likely Broad Habitat for each pixel. Four freely available 1x1km raster products summarise the 25x25m raster.
Previous CEH land cover maps, LCMGB 1990 and LCM2000 have been very successful and used in numerous applications. LCM2007, through technological advances and the use of national cartography has improved thematic and spatial accuracy over its predecessors.
These increase its potential uses and in conjunction with other data, LCM2007 will be a vital research component in the following sectors:
Atmosphere & climate
Water & catchments
Ecosystem service assessment
Marine & coastal
Ecology & conservation
Impact assessment
Health & hazards
Agriculture
Landscape planning
Telecommunications
Urban studies
Statistics, information
Education & publicity
Carbon accounting
