Penguins colonise Liverpool City of Culture 2008

Percy the polite Penguin and his friend Cherie the cheerful chick have become involved in an initiative by Liverpool City Council to address the woeful lack of manners and tidiness of youngsters. As a City of Culture Liverpool knows a thing or two about manners!

The birds hatched at Amberol Limited have waddled into the playground of Liverpool Schools to deliver and audible message of: 'Thanks for your rubbish, we like being fed by you' as well as displaying a sign which thanks the children for keeping the area clean.

These birds are a very innovative way of encouraging children to keep defined areas clean and tidy and testimonials illustrate that they have worked in other areas. The children identify with them and treat them as confidantes. The birds will be well treated and housed at night so any concerns about cruelty can be allayed. Their staple diet of rubbish - up to 90 litres each per day should certainly help keep Liverpool a cleaner city.
