Up the garden path and away from Landfill
17 March 2006, News release from Compact & Bale Ltd
Chessington Garden Centre has been a family run business for 37 years. It retails from 9 of its 18-acre site and its management and staff pride themselves on being an environmentally friendly and socially responsible company.
Jolyon Martin from Chessington Garden Centre says,' The horticultural industry should be leading in terms of setting a good example by being more environmentally proactive and recycling. Now that the landfill directive has issued clear objectives on waste management we are doing our best at Chessington Garden Centre to reduce what we send to landfill.'
They used to hire baler from another supplier, which Jolyon felt was overpriced and not capable of managing all of the polythene, cardboard and plastic tray waste that the centre was generating. After bumping into Steve Burnett from Compact and Bale Ltd (www.compact-and-bale.com) and discovering that he could buy two high capacity, heavy duty mill size balers for less than the 5 year rental cost of the other machine, Jolyon hasn't looked back.
'Now we have a pair of larger machines which allows us to be more efficient as we don't have to empty the chambers as much. Our staff all undertook training from myself and Compact and Bale on how to use the machines and we now have a very efficient waste management process,' says Jolyon,'whereas before we bought the machines from Compact and Bale, our packaging was building up into mountains of waste.'
Having reduced what they send to landfill by half, from over two 8-yard skips to just one a week, Chessington Garden Centre feel they are ahead of other garden centres.
'We are very happy with the whole package from Compact and Bale which includes a maintenance contract' states Jolyon 'The only thing which could be improved is that the government has set these targets to recycle waste but it's incredibly difficult to get dirty plastic and polythene material recycled. I think more thought should be given to improve the recycling process.'
'I would recommend anyone to book a free waste survey with Compact and Bale for their business it has certainly saved us money,' Jolyon announces. To contact Compact & Bale call direct on 01732 852244 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
