The money is part of a government-backed drive to support research and development for the UK’s farming, food and drink sector.

Under the scheme, large food producers will be encouraged to invest in projects that increase the efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness of their processing and manufacturing operations.

A further £500,000 will also be available to small and medium sized businesses through grants of up to £25,000.

Defra is bankrolling the scheme in conjunction with the Scottish Government, the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council and the Technology Strategy Board.
