Belgium lagging behind on environmental performance, says OECD
Belgium has not made the same environmental progress as a number of other OECD countries - "a major effort has begun and will need to be sustained to repay the outstanding environmental debt", according to the OECD's latest environmental performance review.
Effluent meter project falters
A project to develop a performance specification and verification procedure for trade effluent meters - a £40,000 contract awarded to Sira Test & Certification Ltd by the DTI last June - has effectively ground to a halt following the presentation of the Project Team's findings at a Technology Transfer Group meeting at Sira's Chislehurst premises.
Railroad company to pay $19 million fine for lead sulphide discharges
Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) has agreed to pay $10 million in fines and restitution and a further $9 million in remediation costs for lead sulphide discharges from the company's railroad car cleaning operation north of Cherryville, Missouri.
