Highly commended status for Swansea Council air quality site
13 April 2007, News release from Enviro Technology Services Plc
Air quality monitoring specialists, Enviro Technology Services, have helped the City & County of Swansea Council achieve a highly commended status with their air quality website in the trade publication - Air Quality Management - 2006 'website review'.
The newsletter praised the website - www.swansea.airqualitydata.com - for its presentation and ease of use, particularly for the options available to the user.
The site provides almost real-time air quality and meteorological data from five automatic and continuous monitoring stations located within the city, all maintained and serviced by Enviro Technology.
Swansea's Air Quality monitoring ensures long terms goals and targets to reduce air pollution are being met. The website complements the monitoring equipments existing upload of numeric data by informing users how good, or bad, the air quality around them is by way of a data display that uses the DEFRA index banding scale.
Enviro Technology provide the local authority with two OPSIS DOAS stations, each measuring levels of NO, Oç, SO2, NO2 and Benzene. Swansea's OPSIS Meteorological monitoring station also uploads hourly data to the web site and has been operational since August 2002, measuring wind speed and wind direction, global radiation, global reflected radiation, pressure, UV-A and UV-B and air temperature.
Says Stephen Hoskin, Enviro Technology's AQMS Sales Manager: "Due to the National air quality monitoring strategy deeming parts of the Lower Swansea valley a 'hot spot', we have been working very closely with the council to develop a strategic and functional method of data collection."
Adds Phil Govier, Swansea CC's Environmental Management Systems Development Officer: "Enviro Technology's AQ web concept enabled us to create an area on our existing website that portrays up-to-the-minute AQ data for internal and external use. The initial vision was to develop our air quality web presence internally, but it soon became evident that this process would entail substantial development time. As ET's airqualitydata.com had already been developed, we took the view that commissioning bespoke enhancements to ET's basic provision would provide us with a more cost effective way forward."
