Touchscreen control doubles energy savings from Spirax EasiHeat on-demand hot water engineered systems
Spirax EasiHeat Engineered Systems for delivering hot water and heating on-demand have been enhanced to deliver up to 20% energy savings compared to conventional steam-to-water heating systems.
EasiHeat now features the Spirax Intelligent Monitoring System (SIMS™). SIMS is an innovative control and monitoring display technology that makes it easy to save energy and control critical applications.
The new control technology uses a colour touchscreen interface to deliver key performance data to operators, such as steam use, fuel consumption and temperature. This helps operators to monitor energy use more closely and adjust the system to optimise efficiency. The interface is intuitive and can be used by operators with limited control experience.
Even without the addition of SIMS, Spirax EasiHeat systems typically offer between six and ten per cent energy savings compared with traditional systems based on shell-and-tube exchangers. The new system delivers a further ten per cent energy saving on average by ensuring that all the useful energy is extracted from the steam before the resulting condensate is returned to the boiler.
EasiHeat is a ready-to-install engineered system that uses steam in a compact, plate-and-frame heat exchanger to provide instant hot water for space heating, domestic hot water (DHW), or process applications. The resulting supply of hot water is available on-demand, without the need for a buffer or storage tank. The controls are matched to the system, enabling an EasiHeat unit to control output temperatures to within ±1oC.
In process applications, EasiHeat's accuracy and reliability ensure a constant supply of hot water at the right temperature, helping to boost productivity and reduce maintenance costs. In DHW and heating applications, EasiHeat typically replaces the traditional calorifiers used in hospitals. This reduces carbon emissions and helps to keep people safe by eliminating a potential source of Legionella.
SIMS is accessible remotely through the Internet or via smartphones using SMS messaging. It is also compatible with most proprietary plant communication networks, including Ethernet, Modbus, Profibus, CANopen, EtherCAT, DeviceNet and BacNet, among others.
Steam users installing multiple EasiHeat™ systems can control all of them via a single 'Master Panel'. This enables Spirax Sarco to provide a range of configurations depending on the application, such as duty/standby installations where redundancy is required, for example.
The SIMS™ touchscreen control panels are built to EN60439 and all the components are temperature tested to withstand tough plant room conditions.
