The Irish planning board has given the go-ahead for the Poolbeg Incinerator in Ringsend, which will be the largest incinerator in the country, capable of burning 600,000 tonnes of waste, the Irish Independent reports.

Local residents are largely opposed to the scheme because of pollution worries, and various measures have been written into the planning permission in order to placate them.

A community liaison committee will be established to communicate with locals regarding the development, and Poolbeg management will also create a fund to be used to build new community facilities.

In order to minimise traffic congestion in the area, cars will have to use the M50 and Port Tunnel to access the incinerator.

Ringsend is also the site of the Poolbeg power station, an oil and natural gas plant that has two distinctive chimney that stand over 200 metres tall.
