Antrim households keen to cut carbon emissions

More than 100,000 households in Northern Ireland have made commitments to cut carbon emissions, with residents in County Antrim the most enthusiastic.

Figures from the Energy Saving Trust indicate that people in Antrim could collectively save more than £900,000 a year in fuel bills if they follow through with their promises – financial savings that will be welcome in today’s harsher economic climate.

Residents in County Fermanagh were found to be the least enthusiastic about making changes, although they could still make more than £83,000 annual fuel bills savings.

The trust’s head in Northern Ireland, Noel Williams, said: “If everyone in Northern Ireland who committed honours their promises, collectively they will save around £2.7m a year, which is enough CO2 a year to fill 110,000 double-decker buses, nearly 19,000 tonnes.”

The Energy Saving Trust provides information about how people can save energy – and money – around the home.

Top tips include switching appliances off standby when they are not in use, considering greener modes of transport and buying eco-friendly white goods.
