Hundreds of lorry drivers descended on London on Tuesday to protest over soaring fuel prices.

The truckers are complaining about the rising price of diesel – now routinely over £1.20 per litre – and Government plans to add a further 2p of tax per litre and increase road tax for older, more polluting vehicles.

The Government claims the tax rises are driven by the green agenda but the issue has turned into the standard tug of war between Defra and the Treasury.

Business Secretary John Hutton told the BBC that the government was trying to encourage people to go green without hammering them.
