Designed for hard-to-treat non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) sites, this innovative and cost-effective source area management technology is ideal for manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites, wood treating facilities, petroleum product refineries, and related sites impacted by phase-seperated organic constituents of interest (COI), as well as heavy metals. How it works
ISGS in situ geochemical stabilization entails the use of modified permanganate solutions for the purposes of mass removal and flux reduction (i.e., NAPL stabilization). As the oxidant migrates through the treatment area, various (bio)geochemical reactions destroy the targeted compounds present in the dissolved phase. This causes a "hardening" or "chemical weathering" of the NAPL as it steadily loses its more labile components. This causes a net increase in viscosity of the organic material, which yields a more stable, recalcitrant residual mass. In addition, the insoluble MnO2 precipitate that results from catalyzed permanganate oxidation will accumulate along the NAPL interface, physically coating it and thereby reducing the flux of dissolved-phase COI into the groundwater.

Data from field-scale activities, along with our continued research and development efforts (10+ years in technology development) demonstrate the significant advantages of the catalyzed ISGS technology provided exclusively by Adventus:
1. Rapid Permeability Reduction / Dest Stabilization: Soils permeability can be reduced >98% after only 8 days incubation with catalyzed ISGS reagents.
2. COI Flux Reduction: The catalyzed, buffered ISGS reagents yield significant reductions in the amount of PAHs leached from the soils after only 8 days of treatment. Similar results were observed with pentachlorophenol.
3. High Compatibility with Natural Attenuation Technologies. Once the source of dissolved phase COIs is stabilized, myriad natural attenuation processes act to rapidly reduce plume dimensions.
4. Safe and Easy to Apply: The buffered ISGS reagents have been applied to various lithologies and fractured bedrock (karst) via direct push technologies, soils mixing, infiltration galleries or well applications.
Use of ISGS for source area management represents an effective, sustainable way to address NAPL issues and accelerate closure of challenging sites. It also allows for EPR processes to be applied to areas where conventional MNA approaches are currently not considered to be applicable or appropriate. Our experience suggests that a single round of injections into a targeted source area will rapidly (e.g., 2 months) remove contaminant mass and significantly reduce the flux of COI into the dissolved phase. The long-term stability of the process has been modeled from 50 to >400 years.
What Does It Cost?
Field-data at several sites reveals that ISGS can be <50% of the historical cost of current conventional alternatives. For example, at a site in Florida, full-scale ISGS using an application rate of 4.5% at 5% pore volume has an estimated product cost of $21.75/cubic yard and a total product plus installation cost of $25.60/cubic yard. And in terms of sustainability, the ISGS technology can exhibit significant advantages over pump-and-treat or thermal treatment approaches for managing NAPL sites.
