A forum for energy savings in Billingham

Powerstar has released its latest case study showcasing the energy consumption and cost saving benefits achievable on a diverse range of facilities through its energy saving, voltage optimisation solutions. This is the first in a series of case studies following multiple installations at a selection of Tees Active Ltd sites across Teesside.

Tees Active Ltd is a charitable social enterprise established in 2004. It operates and maintains a plethora of leisure facilities across Teesside and actively seeks ways to reduce energy consumption and generate cost savings across its portfolio. As it aims to provide high quality leisure services across the entire community, it sought investment opportunities which had short payback periods allowing for more money to be invested into its facilities and member experience.

Powerstar worked closely with the Tees Active team to identify the sites which would provide the maximum savings within the shortest payback period. One of the sites identified was the Billingham Forum, a large leisure complex at the heart of its community, which operates 7 days a week offering a wide range of on-site activities. Because of this, the facility requires an extensive variety of electrical equipment in order to operate effectively.

Due to these characteristics, the Powerstar team identified Billingham Forum as a  viable candidate for voltage optimisation technology. A series of thorough site surveys in addition to an evaluation of the voltage profile confirmed that the facility suffered from a substantial amount of overvoltage relative to the requirements of the majority of electrical equipment being utilised on the premises.

The range of the activities and facilities offered by Billingham Forum is extensive and diverse. They range from a 547-seat theatre, which includes two bars, to a recently refurbished, fully equipped ice arena, as well as a number of specialist and family pools and even an Activ8 gym with an extensive array of cardio and strength training equipment.

After evaluating the facility’s voltage profile, Powerstar discovered the incoming voltage to be stable but higher than required for the range of electrical equipment on-site, making fixed low voltage optimisation the ideal solution to provide Billingham Forum with the desired reductions to consumption and costs.

The Powerstar team recommended the installation of a 750kVA Powerstar LITE system with a fixed 15V reduction on the supply. It was provided through a full concept to completion service with a fully supported turnkey solution which is currently delivering significant savings to the facility’s energy consumption and electricity costs, exceeding Billingham Forum’s 100% guaranteed savings.

Commenting on the solution Powerstar provided, Dennis Smith, Project Manager for Tees Active Ltd, said: “We found working with Powerstar to be very easy as they did everything they could to accommodate our requirements not only in which unit was best suited to deliver the greatest efficiency, but also in ensuring minimum disruption.

“Work was carried out overnight which meant there was no disruption to our operational hours and our customers. This is one of the simplest ways to achieve instant cost-effective energy savings and would highly recommend Powerstar.”
