Cracking energy saving ideas for your Christmas shutdown
Ready for Christmas? What about at work - have you started preparing? If your organisation closes over the holidays, make sure your Christmas shutdown is a cracker this year with these helpful hints!
A comprehensive shutdown procedure will cut energy waste and minimise costs over the festive period. Read our helpful hints to ensure your holiday shutdown is as energy efficient as possible.
1. Ensure high level engagement by getting someone at board level to sponsor the shutdown campaign; this is essential for the message to carry weight.
2. Ensure there are energy champions in place to spear head the campaign and provide guidance to all staff.
3. Organise a pre-shutdown meeting with those involved at a strategic level, investigate what can be switched off and what can be set back, but remember operational requirements must come first.
4. Read the gas and electricity meters before and after the shutdown to see what was used and compare with normal usage. Celebrate and communicate good results!
5. Promote competition between different organisation units and consider rewarding the area that makes the most effort.
6. Investigate what can be controlled centrally. Can the heating systems be turned off completely and brought up to comfortable temperature shortly before your employees return? If not, ensure temperatures are set back as much as possible and investigate all localised thermostats to ensure they are set appropriately. Remember that controls must be set to ensure that buildings, equipment and services are protected against frost damage.
7. Arrange for somebody to tour the site during the shutdown to note where equipment may have been left on unnecessarily.
8. Beware standby mode! Where possible, make sure all equipment is switched off, not put into standby mode. Most office equipment still uses around 10% of its power in standby mode, it all adds up!
9. Make sure all lights are switched off. This includes external lighting where it is not essential; security lamps are very large consumers of electricity.
10. Switch off or set back all production equipment provided this can be done without compromising safety and expense. Make sure this is discussed at the pre-shutdown meeting with the appropriate production staff.
11. Consider the use of hot desks in a small area of the offices for those that want to come to work over the shutdown period. This will minimise the need for lighting and comfort heating the whole building.
12. Set aside a short shutdown implementation period, around 30 minutes at the end of the final day before the break to allow staff to perform the necessary shutdown procedures. It will be time well spent
