Russell Roof Tiles appoints E.ON to install combined heat and power operations

Last updated: 17th January 2018

E.ON has secured a contract to install a new combined heat and power (CHP) system for Russell Roof Tiles, one of the UK's largest independent roof tile manufacturers, improving the efficiency and reliability of energy generation on their sites and helping the company to reduce costs in the manufacturing process.

The installation of a 240kW CHP unit – which generates both heat and electricity from the same fuel source – will help reduce the company’s electricity dependency on the grid and provide them more efficient heat for the tile making process.

The 15-year agreement will see E.ON manage installation and operations at the company’s head office and one of its manufacturing plants in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, helping the company with greater certainty around energy costs and improved efficiency and reliability for what is a key part of the company’s operations.

This long-term agreement provides manufacturers with predictable costs and equipment reliability for the future, allowing them to focus on their core business.

Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with E.ON on the new CHP system.  This investment in is an important next step in our ambitions to be an even more sustainable business, allowing us to reduce emissions and lessen our carbon footprint.

“This is a pioneering system and enables us to benefit from on-site generation. As the energy market is always changing it will be good to be a partner with a major company to develop future projects as our company grows.”

Phil Gilbert, Director of Energy Solutions at E.ON, added: “This project will ensure Russell Roof Tiles has a more reliable and efficient energy supply that allows the business to get on with what they do best – providing roofing solutions for commercial and housing projects. Alongside that, we can use our expertise in energy solutions to maximise efficiency and deliver guaranteed performance of the plant within a flexible operation strategy.

“E.ON is well placed to deliver integrated energy solutions for the manufacturing sector, helping to combine on-site energy technology with customers’ operational needs and to explore opportunities in the energy markets where customers can potentially benefit from providing backup power sources for the UK grid.”

This is the latest initiative by Russell Roof Tiles who are the only British roof tile manufacturer to have achieved an “Excellent” rating for responsible sourcing, recognising the company’s dedication to sustainability. Russell Roof Tiles is an operation that invests in sustainability right across its procurement process, from raw materials through to energy management.
