The UK drinks 95 million cups of coffee every day, equating to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of used coffee grounds each year. Typically these grounds are sent to landfill where they emit harmful greenhouse gases like methane, which is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. bio-bean is an award-winning clean technology company, the first in the world to recycle used coffee grounds on an industrial scale. We manufacture a range of innovative biofuels and biochemicals from these recycled spent coffee grounds, saving businesses money, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and displacing conventional fossil fuels and other virgin resources.

Waste Coffee Recycling

bio-bean works with the existing waste management infrastructure to collect used coffee grounds from coffee shops, offices, restaurants and transport hubs in urban areas within the UK where there is a high concentration of spent coffee grounds.

We recycle these used grounds into a variety of sustainable, high-performance bio-products, generating 80% less emissions than if the grounds were sent to landfill.

Our products include a brand of eco heating briquettes for woodburners and stoves, called Coffee Logs. We also make coffee-derived heating pellets for industrial scale biomass boilers. And we’re investing in research and development of biochemicals extracted from the remaining compounds of the spent coffee grounds for uses in the food & beverage and cosmetic industries.

We collect used coffee grounds from businesses at every scale, from instant coffee factories, large transport hubs and office blocks to high street coffee chains, restaurants and small independent cafés. Through our waste management partners, we collect coffee grounds from the likes of Costa Coffee, Caffè Nero, Leon, Greggs, University of Cambridge, University of Birmingham, Network Rail and more.
