Recycling incentive scheme for Bracknell Forest Council
SUEZ recycling and recovery UK helps Bracknell Forest Council reward residents for separating their recycling properly, by offering points that can be exchanged for local rewards.
To provide a recycling incentive scheme
The UK government wants to improve waste management and increase recycling rates in the country.
Bracknell Forest Council wanted to provide a recycling incentive scheme with the following objectives:
- Increase recycling participation
- Reduce contamination
- Promote waste minimisation
- Provide wider health and social benefits
e+ smartcards linked to rewards
Each participating resident is given an e+ smartcard that contains a radio-frequency identification (RFID) number linked to their home address.
Identification chips in residents’ bins are connected to their e+ smartcards.
All SUEZ collection vehicles are equipped with on-board computing and RFID readers, so, as each labelled bin is lifted, the corresponding RFID is recorded.
For each collection when their recycling bins are not contaminated, residents receive 200 points which can be converted to rewards.
Residents can see their total points via the incentive scheme rewards portal.
Points can be redeemed for a range of rewards from council-run premises, including:
- Leisure centre activities and membership
- Various activities at golf complexes
- Book, DVD and computer game hire from libraries
- Green rewards (discounted water butts, composters etc.)
Alternatively, residents can donate their points to a good cause of their choice.
We worked in partnership with Bracknell Forest Council and SmartCitizen, who gave valuable input during the design and implementation of the scheme.
The e+ smartcard system was already in place, which meant that the council could manage the scheme with a paperless rewards redemption system.
Good communication was vital to launch the project and recruit participants.
The project was funded with government support, and can be continually developed as required.
Recycling sorted correctly
The scheme raises awareness of recycling, and encourages residents to sort their recycling correctly. This improves performance and benefits the environment, because there are fewer contaminated bins.
Increased engagement with residents also improves the council’s image, and promotes their other activities in the Bracknell area – a win:win all round.
