Irish Government provides water funding

The Irish government has announced funding to improve water supplies for businesses and the public in Donegal County in the west of the country.

John Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, revealed that he has approved a Euro 42.2m scheme for the

Lough Mourne and Letterkenny Water Supply Scheme.

The planned improvements will provide for additional water storage at Lough Mourne by improving ameliorating measures and expanding the

Meencrumlin Watewater Treatment Plant.

In addition, the distribution system in the region will be improved and extended to cover Letterkenny.

Revealing the project, Mr Gormley said: “This approval reflects the commitment in the programme for Government that our drinking water supplies will deliver a reliable service that is 100 per cent compliant with drinking water standards.

“I have asked Donegal County Council to ensure that the preparation of the contract documents proceeds immediately to ensure the construction of this important scheme gets underway as soon as possible.”

Last week, the Government recognised the vital role that the Irish Water Safety (IWS) organisation plays in promoting water safety in the

country.
