Hiab Moffett E-Series all-electric truck mounted forklifts comes to market at CV Show
24 April 2013, News release from Cargotec UK Limited
A new range of super-quiet, all-electric truck-mounted forklifts (TMFLs) - the Hiab Moffett E-Series Pro Future - is being brought to market at the 2013 Commercial Vehicle Show (Stand 4H90).
Along with the flexibility that TMFLs bring of providing a loading/unloading capability anywhere, key additional benefits of these advanced electric forklifts are:
- Near silent operation
- No harmful emissions
- Reduced running costs
- Reduced total cost of ownership
- Fast recharging using an on-board charger
Designed primarily for the loading and unloading of vehicles at night in built up areas, the Hiab Moffett E-Series of TMFLs use advanced electronic technology to achieve a noise level below 60dba.
This is within the limit set by the PIEK regulations, which determine the noise levels that delivery equipment should operate under at night, these have been adopted in the UK and are widely used on the Continent. As a result the Noise Abatement Society, which administers the PIEK scheme in the UK, has accredited the E-Series with its Quiet Mark for its contribution to reducing noise.
The Hiab Moffett E-Series comprises two models; the 1.2 tonne capacity E2 and the 2.0 tonne E4. Both use the latest Lithium-ion batteries feeding power through programmable AC controllers that convert the DC current to AC for the electric motors that drive the wheels, hydraulics and steering.
The Lithium-ion batteries offer a number of advantages. They are low in weight, can cope with a high number of charge cycles, can be recharged in as little as four hours using the on-board charger and have a low self-discharge level. They also deliver constant performance over longer operating hours.
'Steer by Wire' technology is used in conjunction with an efficient AC steering motor to remove the noise associated with hydraulic steering and a helical gear pump ensures ultra quiet hydraulics. Further noise reduction in operation is achieved as a result of the development of an optional quiet version of the standard Moffett TMFL mounting kit.
An added environmental benefit of the Hiab Moffett E-Series TMFLs is that they are totally emissions free. Over a five year period this will typically save up to 200kg of particulate matter from entering the atmosphere when compared with an equivalent diesel powered forklift. This opens up new applications for "out to in" deliveries by allowing these forklifts to operate into a cold store or warehouse direct from the delivery vehicle, thus reducing the need for additional equipment and personnel.
The powerful single steerable drive wheel makes the E-Series highly maneouvrable and capable of operating in confined areas. The spacious driver compartment provides all-round visibility and comfort with all controls and pedals easy to reach, read and operate. Slip resistant steps, a flashing beacon, work lights and reverse bleeper help provide maximum safety for the operator and pedestrians. When hooked onto the back of the truck powerful LED road lights make the equipment highly visible to other road users.
Operators can also expect significant savings of up to 70% in the running costs of the E-Series forklifts when compared to diesel-powered forklifts, based on current fuel and servicing costs. The environmental implications of engine oil and filter changes and the disposal of these items are also removed.
When calculated over a five year period the total cost of ownership (TCO) is also around 30% less than that of a diesel TMFL. Based on current prices the break even point occurs at just over three years and from that point the E-Series delivers a significantly lower TCO.
Hiab national account manager John Bailey says that the introduction of these advanced electric forklifts builds on the success of the Hiab Moffett TMFL of which over 50,000 are currently in service.
"Hiab Moffett pioneered the development of truck mounted forklifts," he says, "and it has become the generic name for this type of equipment. The development of the Hiab Moffett E-Series all-electric versions will ensure that we remain at the leading edge of technology in this field and we expect it to open up new markets in which the environmental benefits of near silent operation and no emissions will be of particular appeal."
