Incinerator Installed in Antarctica Scientific Base

The Halley Research Base is located on the Brunt Ice Shelf, and is run by the British Antarctic Survey.
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is one of the world's leading environmental research centers and is responsible for the UK's national scientific activities in Antarctica, researching and collating meteorological understanding of ozone depletion, atmospheric chemistry, sea level rise and climate change. In fact, measurements from the Halley Station led to the discovery of the ozone hole in 1985.
These new research stations are uniquely designed, innovative structures, built on ice in segmented modules, with a hydraulic leg and ski system that allows the entire station to rise above the annual snow fall. Over time the previous research stations Halley I and IV had become buried by snow accumulation and crushed until they were uninhabitable. The station usually operates "throughout the year with a maximum population of 70 in the summer and an average of 16 over winter." The temperature rarely rises above 0°C, with an average around -20°C.
Since 2006, Todaysure Matthews has been their chosen supplier for general waste and sludge waste incinerators. These incinerators dispose of the waste produced by the camp workers living on these stations, sometimes for several months at a time. Having these incinerators eliminates the potential bio hazard risks associated with transporting the waste off the ice shelf.
Todaysure Matthews has also supplied two containerized general waste incinerators, one for the Rothera Research Station and two units for Halley to dispose of effluent sludge waste. These incinerators were specially designed and adapted to operate in sub-zero temperatures, including extreme lows of around -55°C. Special electrical wiring and components were utilized to ensure that they would deliver top level performance and not seize in these frigid conditions.
