Delivering radiation expertise to customers in Japan
19 April 2011, News release from RSK Group plc
The RSK radiation safety emergency response service
In response to continuing uncertainty about the status of the Fukushima nuclear power station and the possible risks associated with radiation from the site, RSK Radiological Ltd is applying its expertise to support customers who have staff, facilities and operations in Japan.
The company's radiation safety emergency response service is providing information on the radiological conditions in the areas surrounding customers' locations, monitoring the accident conditions and assessing any related impacts on health risks. Customers are receiving daily updates based on the most credible and reliable information on health risks for locations across Japan and in neighbouring countries. These updates contain a status report on the situation at the power plant, a risk rating index, evacuation recommendations (if any) and other professional recommendations for staff.
RSK is also offering remote support and on-site briefings for customer management and staff. Any individual exposed to elevated radiation levels could meet a senior radiation safety expert who would provide factual information on their exposure and answer their questions regarding health risks.
Field monitoring teams equipped with radiation and contamination monitoring equipment are available at a customer's request to measure the levels of radiation and contamination in workplace locations. The results of this survey would be used to document the true levels of exposure and the associated health risks.
At a time when details of the accident and the potential risks remain unclear, RSK Radiological has the expertise to understand and make informed independent assessments. Phil De Foggi, managing director, RSK Radiological, explains, "The technical staff assigned to this project are highly trained and experienced in radiation safety associated with nuclear accidents. Our senior team members are recognised industry experts who can help customers by cutting through the confusion and conflicting messages found in broadcast and print media."
