Delegates have the options of attending days 1-3 (primer); day 4 only (masterclass) or days 1-5 (the full short course):

23 - 25 November 2009: Environmental risk governance primer

  • Day 1. Context and fundamentals - why manage risk; risk and the sustainability agenda, what is an environmental risk assessment?
  • Day 2. Risk management in practice - problem definition, risk screening and prioritisation; engaging publics in risk
  • Day 3. Tools and Techniques - qualitative, quantitative and probabilistic risk analysis tools

  • 26 November 2009: Environmental risk governance masterclass

  • Day 4. Securing preventative risk management; benchmarking; recovering from major incidents; handling and communicating uncertainty

  • 27 November 2009: Implementation

  • Day 5. Implementation issues - high reliability organisations; the politics of risk governance; course summary.

  • Who should attend?

    The course is designed for environmental managers, process engineers, consultants, contractors, policy specialists, regulators, NGO advocates and researchers with risk management responsibilities and interests.

    No previous knowledge of environmental risk management is required. A technical background is helpful, but not essential.
