AMAZON: Gold mining causes mercury poisoning

Informal gold mining is causing mercury contamination at dangerous levels in the Amazon basin. Surveys of some villages found more than 80% of children had hair-mercury concentrations above 10 µg/g, a limit above which adverse effects on brain development are likely to occur.
