AUSTRALIA: hybrid petrol/electric cars to be on sale in 2000

Two Japanese carmakers are to commercialise environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles that run on petrol and self-generated electricity, in Australia next year.


The manufacturers claim that the vehicles reduce both pollution and fuel consumption, but have asked for import and other duties to be waived due to the higher production costs.
