The Dawdon Minewater Treatment Scheme, organised by the Coal Authority, won Best Water and Waste Water at the annual Environmental Awards for Excellence 2009.

The event held last Thursday celebrated the best of environmental technology in use today.

The scheme, which protects the water table of County Durham from contamination, has been operational for a while but was officially opened by Nick Brown, minister for the North East.
