The European Commission (EC) issued a statement today (November 20) attacking the country’s reliance on the Sudohol landfill outside of the capital Sofia.

When Bulgaria was granted European Union membership in 2007 it was told it would have to improve its waste infrastructure.

The statement reads: “Community funding is available to upgrade the capital’s waste infrastructure.

“However, while the Bulgarian authorities have been working towards making important new investments, a solution remains some years away.”

The commission is ‘most concerned’ about a lack of a system and installations for the recovery and disposal of the city’s household waste.

A Bulgarian Government spokesman said: “Most of the relevant administrative infrastructures necessary for the implementation and enforcement are in place and are operational.

“Their capacity has been subject to strengthening; some new structures are being established.”
