CIRIA to issue small bunds guidance

Following the popularity of its guidance on the design and construction of traditional concrete and masonry bunds for oil tanks (CIRIA Report 163), CIRIA is now working with BSRIA to evaluate the effectiveness of using proprietary prefabricated oil storage tank systems to avoid water pollution problems.

These tanks are normally used to store smaller amounts of oil and are frequently self-contained, often incorporating their own bund, but because there is no British Standard covering these “off the shelf” systems, it is difficult for users and regulators to asses the reliability of various designs and their installation and maintenance requirements.

The year-long study will review design criteria and/or features of plastic, steel, fixed and mobile off the shelf tanks and consider their effectiveness in avoiding water pollution. It will also assess how proprietary systems measure up to existing guidelines and produce guidance for use by manufacturers, users, the oil industry and regulators involved with these storage systems.
