Clean energy for monitoring vehicle

Antares' electrical engineering expertise has been called upon by Signal Ambitech, the Oxfordshire-based specialist in air quality monitoring, to help create a power system for a landfill air quality monitoring vehicle.

The requirement was to be able to run the technical load, IT load and air conditioning for a full day on stored energy. Use of generator sets was not appropriate, given the risk that the vehicle would sample the generator exhaust, thereby nullifying the results.

Engineers at the Gerrards Cross-based Antares designed a system that utilises cyclic duty GEL batteries powering the latest Antares sine wave inverters. These inverters are particularly suited to the problems of high current peaks demanded by the air conditioning during start-up while still producing an undistorted sine wave. The system is recharged overnight or when an opportunity presents itself.

The first vehicle is now in service with the environmental arm of a waste processing company.
