A barge used to carry oily sludge from the site of a spill that devastated the Philippines earlier in the year (see related story) has capsized, spilling its cargo into the ocean.
59,000 sacks of sludge were lost in the accident, which occurred about four miles off the coast as the barge headed towards a reprocessing plant owned by Petron, the company which had commissioned the tanker which sank in the original spill.
Petron has issued a statement saying that the sludge does not pose a risk to health, and has sent clean-up vessels to contain the spill caused by the clean-up vessel.
