Climate publicity campaign launched

The government has launched a major marketing and advertising campaign aimed at reducing Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions.

The publicity blitz, which is part of the Change campaign announced last year, is targeting large organisations, small businesses and the public sector.

John Gormley, minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, said: “What Ireland does about climate change matters.

“What we each do in our own lives at work, at home and in our communities influences and motivates others and we will, together, contribute to the global solution.”

The first part of the advertising campaign kicked off with a 60-second advert shown on Irish television last week telling viewers that climate change is “the single biggest challenge” faced by Ireland.

As well as extensive advertising, the communications campaign includes a website and an information line, which can be contacted on 1890-242 643.

The website describes how carbon emissions are created through everyday tasks and will be introducing a carbon calculator at the end of April so users can audit their carbon usage.

Earlier in the month, local authorities from across Ireland attended a conference in Kilkenny outlining the national and international policies regarding climate change.
