Recycling and waste management company Biffa was brought in to identify and make lasting improvements in the way TK Maxx managed its waste, helping it divert 86% of its waste from landfill in less than six months.

TK Maxx’s parent company TJX Europe’s global sourcing and procurement manager Peter Hewitt said the move was one of the most successful changes the retailer had made as part of its commitment to be a responsible retailer.

By reducing its waste to landfill by 4,800 tonnes each year, TK Maxx was able to make a 33% reduction in disposal costs, year on year for the same quarter since the project rollout in September 2012.

Biffa corporate account manager Dave Robinson said: “By working with Biffa, TK Maxx has been able to make significant progress in reducing its environmental footprint. They are now recycling much more and spending less on waste disposal, meaning more savings to pass onto customers.”

Launched in the UK in 1994, TK Maxx has been working on reducing its carbon footprint since 2008.
