Coffin gets a new life as it is put out for recycling in Surrey
A coffin, a sailing boat, and giant polystyrene snowman are just some of the wacky items people have dropped off at Surrey County Council's community recycling centres.
Other notable items included two van loads of stamps, a grand piano, a caravan and diving equipment including an oxygen tank, wetsuit and fins. The news comes as the council announced it had reached a 50% household waste recycling rate for the county.
The council says it is looking to build on its success and aims to hit a 70% household waste recycling target by 2014.
The council’s cabinet member for environment, Dr Lynne Hack, said: “While we may not be able to recycle all the waste produced yet, we will work hard to treat everything we can, no matter how weird and wonderful it is.”
