Conditional acceptance for re-use in USA
WEDECO AG reports that its US subsidiary - Wedeco-Ideal Horizons Inc, of Vermont - is the first UV company to have received a 'conditional acceptance' in the US for its TAK55 UV disinfection system for for wastewater re-use.
This follows a revision of the National Water Research Institute guidelines
by the National Water Research Institute (NWRI) and American Water Works Association
Research Foundation (AWWARF) in 2000. The TAK55 system can now be used for the
disinfection of filtered wastewater for water recycling.
Ultraviolet Disinfection – Guidelines for Drinking Water and Water Reuse
was published by the National Water Research Institute (NWRI) and American Water
Works Association Research Foundation (AWWARF) in December 2000.
The international professional engineering firm CH2MHill was engaged by WEDECO
to conduct an independent evaluation of TAK55’s system performance, to demonstrate
that the technology could meet the performance requirements dictated by the
revised NWRI/AWWARF Guidelines. The testing of the system was carried out with
the support of the Orange County Water District at its Green Acres Project (GAP)
in Fountain Valley, California.
The TAK55 system uses high performance low pressure, high intensity UV lamps.
Distinguishing features and achievements include:
- An extensive global track record disinfecting primary, secondary and tertiary
treated municipal effluent to a wide variety of regulatory standards
- Independently certified UV power output and variable control from 50 –
- A unique, pneumatically driven chemical-free lamp cleaning system proven
worldwide to keep TAK55 systems clean and operating at peak performance
Operation and maintenance friendly separation of system mechanical and electrical
components for long term, reliable operation and ease of service.
As the first UV technology accepted by the DHS for Title 22 in accordance with
the new NWRI/AWWARF Guidelines, design engineers and municipalities in California
now have the comfort of knowing that a design including the TAK55 UV system
can be approved by the DHS. More importantly, they can feel confident that the
water delivered from these systems will meet the strict requirements imposed
by the State of California for water reuse.
This assurance was an important factor for the City of Lincoln, developer Del
Webb California Corporation and the California-based engineering firm ECO:LOGIC,
in selecting the WEDECO TAK55 system for a planned wastewater reuse facility.
The design flow for the Lincoln UV system is 6.7 million gal/day (MGD), or
1,057 meters3/hour (m³/h) with provisions for a future upgrade to 8.04
MGD (1,268 m³/h). For this project, WEDECO will deliver all required electrical
control and power supply equipment pre-installed and tested in an insulated
and air-conditioned prefabricated building structure. This delivery concept
minimizes the system installation, start-up and field-testing time and is more
cost-effective than a traditional on-site assembly approach. The structure is
also designed to provide a perfect environment for the operation of the electrical
equipment while providing easy access for maximum system serviceability.
