Despite opening 29 new hotels and more than 100 coffee shops across the country, the Costa Coffee and Premium Inn parent says its savings represent an 11% reduction in carbon emissions relative to sales revenue.

The group’s head of energy and environment, Chris George, said Whitbread’s achievements were in response to the pursuit of ‘stretching targets’ to reduce energy and water consumption and the improved handling of waste across the business. These areas were being attacked by installing energy saving technologies at existing sites, investing in new sustainable hotels and restaurants and educating staff to save energy and water.

He added that every hotel and restaurant in the Group now has electricity, gas and water data logging meters to record consumption and eliminate unnecessary wastage.

In addition, Whitbread’s latest Environment Report, working from a 2009 baseline, commits the Group to a five-year plan of reducing carbon emissions by a total of 25%, saving 15% in water consumption and achieving zero waste to landfill performance.
