CRC league table winners celebrate
Twenty five businesses and organisations topped the first ever CRC league table released this morning (November 8).
Among those coming top of the 2106 strong list, worth about £734m according to independent analysis, was Colchester Hospital University Trust in Essex.
Other high performers in the top 25 were Manchester United, Ofgem and the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) the latter two leading by example.
The trust’s energy and sustainability manager only joined a year ago with a remit for delivering a strong performance on the CRC table.
Speaking to edie energy a delighted Dr Vallabesan Rasaratnam said it was ‘early actions’ which led to the high placing in the table.
He said: “At that moment my first priority was to work on the CRC as the health sector
should set an example to lead in carbon reduction, energy efficient and sustainability.
“We started early and installed automated meter reading system, which benefitted us a lot.
“And, the early action matrix work we carried out coupled with the installation of a new low carbon and high efficiency steam boilers as well as LED light fittings were a great benefit.”
Dr Rasaratnam, who has a PhD in energy and sustainability, also praised the Carbon Saver Scheme which, he says, is equivalent to the Carbon Trust Standard and rated Colchester Hospital as Gold Standard.
He also praised the work of the trust’s Estate and Facilities Department Team in particular his line manager the hospital’s head of facilities Terry Roberson.
WSP Environment and Energy director, David Symons, was particularly impressed with the performance in the public sector.
He added: “In general, universities and public sector bodies appear to be in the upper half of performers, which is to be applauded. The top-ranking performances by DECC is particularly impressive.”
