Daily Climate Show: Sky to launch dedicated climate news programme
Sky is launching a daily news show dedicated to the rising necessity of tackling the climate crisis and the solutions that exist to do so.
Sky is launching the dedicated prime time news show as part of its involvement as one of the principal corporate partners for the COP26 climate summit.
From 7 April, Anna Jones will present ‘The Daily Climate Show’, a 15-minute programme that will run on the Sky News website and app, on YouTube and Twitter at 6.30pm and 9.30pm Monday to Friday.
A weekly edition of the coverage will also be pushed across social media platforms alongside a “Climatecast” podcast and a digital dashboard that gives viewers access to real time data on power generation and the impacts that has on climate change.
The show will highlight solutions to the climate crisis and equip viewers with examples of small changes they can make.
Sky News head John Ryley said: “There has never been a more urgent need to report accurately on the climate crisis and to bring this story to new audiences. In this critical year for action ahead of COP26, The Daily Climate Show from Sky News will feature forensic data-journalism, expert analysis and eye-witness reporting and look at the solutions to climate change.”
Sky will act as the principal media partner for COP26, which is scheduled to take place in Glasgow this November.
As part of its coverage process, Sky set new commitments concerning the environmental impact of its TV productions that will build towards the broadcaster’s ambition of becoming net-zero carbon by 2030.
Part of the net-zero target will focus on Sky’s building and facilities and its transport fleet. Sky is exploring how to add renewables to some buildings, both from procurement contracts and onsite installations. New studios, like Sky Studios Elstree, will also help deliver net-zero TV and film emissions due to the sustainability features added to those buildings. Since 2019, all Sky Originals in the UK have been certified as carbon neutral.
COP26 President Alok Sharma said: “As we prepare for COP26 in Glasgow I’m delighted to see how Sky, a Principal Partner and Media Partner for COP26, is informing and engaging its viewers about the climate crisis, and the need for urgent action, through the Daily Climate Show. Businesses, including media organisations, have a key part to play on the road to Glasgow and in helping us all build back greener.”
Major media heavyweights are turning their attention to COP26, with many choosing to introduce “green campaigns” to raise awareness of the climate crisis amongst readers. The Times, for example, has launched a “20 ways to help save the planet campaign” while the Express has also launched a dedicated green campaign.
Last month, BBC, Sky News and ITV News all agreed to help the UK’s news broadcasting sector minimise its environmental impact and engage viewers on topics like climate change.
