Deal not out of reach – Yvo de Boer

Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, spoke to journalists about divisions between the developing world and the US.

He outlined how the USA’s expectations that all countries sign up to carbon cutting commitments did not sit well with what had come out of the last gathering of nations in Bali, where it was acknowledged that the wealthy states would continue to shoulder the bulk of the responsibility for emissions.

He explained the developing world’s reluctance to let go of Kyoto, saying it was the only binding legal framework on the table and they felt there was nothing to usefully replace it at the moment.
